February 6, 2025 ISCSD Book Talk: Exploring The Art of Fate Calculation

Date: February 6, 2025
Time: 14:00 (CEST)
Location: Online (Zoom link below)

The International Society for the Critical Study of Divination (ISCSD) invites you to an engaging Book Talk featuring Stéphanie Homola’s groundbreaking work, The Art of Fate Calculation: Practicing Divination in Taipei, Beijing, and Kaifeng.

This ethnographic study delves into the intricate world of divination practices in mainland China and Taiwan, offering insights into how fate calculation continues to shape personal, cultural, and societal dynamics in the modern era. From street consultations to institutional settings, the book unpacks the transmission of divinatory knowledge and its interactions with social legitimacy and stigma.

We are honored to welcome the author, Stéphanie Homola (Centre national de la recherche scientifique), as the presenter. Adding depth to the discussion will be Esther-Maria Guggenmos, Professor of the History of Religions at Lund University, who will serve as the discussant. Together, they will explore the practice of divination as both a deeply personal and culturally embedded phenomenon.

This event promises to offer rich scholarly dialogue and fresh perspectives on Chinese divination, making it a must-attend for anyone interested in religious studies, cultural anthropology, and East Asian traditions.
