FAU Seminar on „Theology Meets Astrology“

A seminar exploring the relationship between theology and astrology in Islamic cultural history will begin next month at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). The seminar will feature textual analysis, practical work with astronomical instruments and a historical study of specialist astrological texts.

Theologie tritt Astrologie: “Wie oben, so unten.” Den Sternenhimmel und den Lauf der Planeten als ein Spiegelbild des irdischen Lebens zu verstehen und im Umkehrschluss aus ihrem Zusammenspiel Ratschlüsse für das Leben auf Erden ableiten zu können, gehört zu den Grundüberzeugungen vieler (nicht nur) vormoderner Gesellschaften. Doch wie lässt sich das vereinbaren mit der Vorstellung eines allmächtigen Schöpfergottes? Diesen und weiteren Fragen geht das Seminar “Theologie trifft Astrologie” für die islamische Kulturgeschichte nach, zum einen anhand von Texten für und wider die Astrologie, zum anderen in der praktischen Arbeit mit astronomischen Instrumenten und der Auseinandersetzung mit astrologischen Fachtexten aus historischer Perspektive. Studierende und weitere Interessierte aller Fachrichtungen sind willkommen; für Studierende außerhalb der Islamwissenschaft/Orientalistik werden schriftliche Teilnahmebestätigungen ausgestellt.

Theology Meets Astrology: “As above, so below.” Understanding the starry sky and the course of the planets as a mirror image of earthly life—and conversely deriving insights for life on Earth from their interaction—belongs to the fundamental beliefs of many pre-modern societies. But how can this be reconciled with the idea of an almighty creator god? This seminar examines these and other questions in Islamic cultural history through texts for and against astrology, practical work with astronomical instruments, and engagement with astrological specialist texts from a historical perspective. Students and interested people from all fields of study are welcome; students outside Islamic Studies/Orientalism will receive certificates of participation.

The organizers would like to emphasize that attendees with little or no knowledge of German are very welcome. Most of the reading materials will be available in English. It is also possible to attend individual events without committing to the entire program.
