Jan. 15, 2025, Book Talk: Tristan Brown and the Laws of the Land

We are excited to announce the first ISCSD Book Talk of 2025, featuring Professor Tristan Brown (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), who will present his groundbreaking book, Laws of the Land: Fengshui and the State in Qing Dynasty China (Princeton University Press, 2023), winner of the prestigious John K. Fairbank Prize.

This insightful work explores the intricate roles of fengshui in public life and law during China’s last imperial dynasty, shedding light on how the state and society negotiated its practices and meanings.

Joining Professor Brown in this event is the distinguished Professor Dagmar Schäfer, Director of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) in Berlin. Together, they will engage in a thought-provoking discussion on the intersections of fengshui, governance, and history.
