Discover Volume 5, Issue 2

The second IJDP issue of 2024 continues the series of memorial articles edited by our guest editor Marta Hanson and dedicated to her late mentor Nathan Sivin, one of the most prominent historians of science, technology, and medicine in China.

Michael Lackner and Marta Hanson’s editorial commemorates Nathan Sivin’s contributions to the study of Chinese divination, medicine, and religion, highlighting the methodological foundations he established. Constance A. Cook’s article explores the evolution of the jue genre from esoteric Daoist manuals to broader technical texts, emphasizing its role in transmitting specialized knowledge. Michael Nylan’s paper argues that the modern binaries applied to early Chinese divination texts contradict the worldviews expressed in them, which envisioned a multi-generational community of both the living and the dead. Zhao Lu’s study focuses on the emotional language in Dunhuang divination manuals, particularly how worry was used to gauge uncertainty and auspiciousness. Che-Chia Chang reviews Minakuchi Takuju’s 2016 work on the historical discourse of feng shui from the Song to Qing dynasties, analyzing its development through a Confucian lens.
