“Writing with the Phoenix Brush” in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region

Spirit-writing community from Taiwan

We are very pleased to announce the visit of a spirit-writing (fuji 扶乩 or 扶箕) community from Taiwan, hosted by CAS-E at the invitation of ISCSD president and CAS-E director Michael Lackner.

The practice of “writing with the phoenix brush” remains widespread in Taiwan and parts of China to this day. A religious temple community requests a message from a deity. The deity “descends into the brush” and empowers a medium to write characters either in a container filled with sand or ash, or directly on a tabletop. These characters form the deity’s message, which may serve the moral renewal of humanity or provide answers to individual questions from community members.

Update

Both spirit-writing sessions drew an enthusiastic and welcoming audience and were a success both in terms of cultural exchange and personal experience, especially for those spectators who enjoyed a personal fortune-telling or a spiritual cleansing.
