The International Society for the Critical Study of Divination (ISCSD) is pleased to invite you to our next Book Talk, which will spotlight the landmark volume
The Legacy of Chinese Shamanism: The Wu and Their Successors, edited by Johan Hausen.

This pioneering collection—the first of its kind to focus exclusively on the Chinese Wu (often, though contentiously, translated as “shamans”)—brings together an interdisciplinary range of essays tracing the historical and cultural transformations of the Wu from antiquity to the present. The volume offers fresh perspectives on their multifaceted roles as healers, diviners, exorcists, and ritual specialists, as well as their enduring influence on Chinese literature, theatre, medicine, and religious life.

The discussion will critically examine the complex identity and evolving significance of the Wu, offering new insights into one of the most enigmatic figures in Chinese religious and cultural history.
